Botulinum FAQs

Posted on

Botulinum is a neurotoxin that affects nerves and causes the muscles to ‘relax’ making it an excellent anti – wrinkle treatment. The treatment is more commonly known as Botox and it is often used in the cosmetic industry to reduce tell-tale signs of ageing such as wrinkles and fine lines to help to create a more youthful look.

Is Botulinum and Botox® the same?

Botox® is one of the most widely known brands of botulinum toxin injections. It is an FDA-approved aesthetic product that temporarily smooths out moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines in adults.

How does Botulinum work?

The injections work by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the facial muscles that contract and cause wrinkles. The most common use of these injections is to temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes.

Why is Botulinum used?

The reason why this neurotoxic protein is used is because it is so effective. Injection of small quantities of Botox into specific overactive muscles causes localised muscle relaxation that smooths the overlying skin and reduces wrinkles. The benefits of these injections include:

  • Anti ageing
  • Smoother skin
  • Confidence
  • Enhanced natural beauty
  • Almost immediate results
  • Non invasive
  • Fast procedure
  • Affordable
  • Customisable

Is Botox safe?

Botox treatment has been used safely for over 40 years in a range of medical conditions, including cerebral palsy. Like most medical procedures, there are some potential risks to be aware of although they are rare, during our consultation we will discuss any contraindications with you. The products we use have a high safety record and we ourselves have seen no serious side effects to dat. Added to this, all the practioners at Dr Hennessy’s Clinics have a wealth of medical and aesthetic experience as well as Dr Hennessy himself being a training for the leading product manufacturers.

What is the aftercare of Botulinum injections?

Since the procedure involves carefully injecting the protein into particular areas of the face, it is important that following the treatment you do not rub the treated area. This is important in allowing the botulinum to remain at the injection site and not to be accidentally moved to another area i.e. the eyes. Immediately after the treatment you should not have any beauty facial treatments, power showers to the face or participate in high intensity exercise for 12 hours.

During the consultation and again during the treatment, you will be given instructions from your practitioner on the exact aftercare recommendations of your treatment.

How long does Botox last?

Generally, Botox takes 5-7 days for results to show and over the following months results can become even more apparent. The results can vary depending on the individual, although they do have a relatively short term impact lasting 3 to 4 months before needing to be re-treated. The more of these procedures you have, the more your face muscles react and ‘heal’ which results in less wrinkles over time.
